Chapter Twenty-Five

The day was not bad, except for the encounter with Mitchell and Tate. The weather looked like it was changing again as the sun made a welcome appearance. I was sitting on the chair beside Abe's bed looking out the window. He was looking great. Each day brought more improvement to his recovery. I filled him in on my encounter with the bad guys and Gus Ferguson's timely arrival.

“I think it's possible that Gus might have inadvertently said something to one of his friends at the 7th. Only explanation I can think of for them to have connected me to what's going on. And now that I have been in touch with Sewell, it's a very good bet they know I'm in this.”

“Probably right. So, you figure Sewell is out of the loop?”

“Yeah. He looked genuinely pissed when I gave some bits of information about the shooters, particularly, about the dead one. He really looked like he didn't know.”

“So that puts it on Mitchell and Tate.”

“Looks that way.”

“Jesus. What the hell we coming to when cops start taking out their own. Shit.”

He was angry. Abe is all cop. The job meant something to him. He and Mike Clark; apples from the same tree.

“What're going to do?” he asked.

“Take them down, if I can.”

“Figured as much. Got anything looks like a plan?”

“Only thing I think of is to collect enough evidence against them and pass it over to Mike so he can take it to the DA. Maybe try for a Grand Jury indictment.”

“Sounds good. How you going to do that without them catching on to you?”

“Don't know. Still working on it,” I said.

“In other words, your usual method of 'poke and prod' see what comes to the top.”

“That's what it says in the Acme Detective Manual.”

“Does it also tell you how to not get your head blown off?”

“Haven't read that far yet.”

Abe just shook his head. He always believed that my life was more luck than anything thought out. Had to admit that it did seem that I enjoyed a high degree of luck...so far.

“What'll you do if it gets tight?”

“Whatever I have to.”

“Yeah, well just remember, you shoot a cop for whatever reason, it won't be like shooting a civilian. You'll bring down a ton of crap on your head, especially from their precinct never mind the other guys on the pad.”

I nodded. “I know.”

“You don't have to do this, Matt. It isn't like I died. I'm going to make it back and then I'll go after them.”

“Doesn't matter. They tried to kill you. They could still try, on or off the job. Besides, it's too late to walk away. They know I've been snooping around and talking to certain people. And they threatened me and those close to me. I got to stop them.”

“They make a move on...”

“No. Jane's safe so far. Besides, I told her to start carrying and contact me if she sees anything suspicious or, if she can't get me, Mike.”

He lay there thinking, then said, “She's got the book, right?”

“Sort of,” I said.
